Jennifer was white water rafting for the first time, and accounts her unexpected fall overboard into the water in a way all boaters can relate to. After taking a dip like this, it leaves you wondering why someone wouldn’t wear a life jacket!

According to Coast Guard statistics, in 2007, 476 boaters died from drowning and 427 of them were not wearing life jackets. Most of the boaters that drowned were also passengers. Passengers are at equal or greater risk iof falling overboard if they chose to drink. It’s important to be a responsible skipper and make sure everyone onboard is wearing a properly fitting life jacket and drinks plenty of hydrating fluids…like water!

Clackamas County Marine Patrol Deputies want you to have a great time out on the water…learn what they look for when they’re out patrolling Oregon’s waterways!

For 2009, ALL boaters are required to take a boating safety course and carry a boater education card when operating a boat over 10 hp.

It was a beautiful day in August, when Doug took out his new pontoon boat. His wife Wendy, reminded him to wear his life jacket. He put in on to make her happy, but as he drifted down the McKenzie River, his boat broke apart. Doug found himself in the swift moving water, heading straight for a strainer. He remembered to fasten his life jacket right before entering the water…that it “has to fit properly.” Doug didn’t remember when he’d heard that, but fastened his jacket. He was pinned underwater, losing consciousness. When he came to, he was swirling around in an eddy behind the strainer that trapped him. He would not be alive today if he hadn’t worn his life jacket.

In August 2007, Doug Welsh was boating on the Santiam River when his pontoon boat broke apart. His wife demanded he wear his life jacket. As his boat began breaking apart in the swift current, he remembered a message from a Lane County Marine Patrol officer explaining the importance of a proper fitting life jacket. He buckled up just in time. He fell into the water and was lodged in a strainer, losing consciousness. He remembers ”coming to” and spitting up a lot of water. After his self-rescue and a few days of recouperation, he left this message on the phone of the Lane County Marine Patrol. Very powerful account of a near tragedy.
